Beach House, Malaga

A luxury beach house on the coast near Malaga, designed by By Shakir as a complete residential commission. The project centred on indoor-outdoor living: interiors that open fully to the terrace and garden, materials chosen to age gracefully in sea air and salt light, and a spatial plan that follows the sun through the day.

The Brief

A coastal property near Malaga, used as a second home for extended stays rather than short holidays. The clients wanted an interior that felt permanent, not temporary. Comfortable enough for a month-long stay in August. Durable enough to handle open doors, sandy feet and the Mediterranean climate year-round.

The Approach

The material palette was selected for how it performs in coastal conditions. Natural stone flooring that stays cool and cleans easily. Timber in species that handle humidity without warping. Upholstery in outdoor-grade fabrics that feel indistinguishable from their indoor equivalents.

The spatial plan was designed around the sun's path. Morning light fills the kitchen and breakfast area. The main living space catches afternoon shade through deep overhangs. The terrace faces west for evening use. These are not decorative choices. They determine where you eat, read, rest and gather.

Windows and doors were specified to open fully, collapsing the boundary between interior and terrace. When open, the living room floor and terrace floor read as one continuous surface. The furniture works in both conditions.

The Detail

Procurement for this project required sourcing from Spanish and Italian manufacturers familiar with coastal specifications. Salt air, UV exposure and temperature variation informed every material decision. Each finish was tested and approved during the 3D visualisation stage under simulated natural lighting conditions matching the property's orientation.
